Newcastle Concert Band was formed in 1986 by local professional clarinetist Graeme Evans and bassoonist Tony Hedley. The aim of the group is to enjoy playing music together and to further the musical experience of all age groups and improve musical standards in the common bond of musical performance.

Our Musical Director David Milner is a talented and experienced French horn player and began conducting the band in the early 1990s. John Pearce our bandmaster is our deputy conductor.

The band has around 40 regular players and we rehearse once a week during term time on Tuesday evenings from 7.30-9.30 in Jesmond, Newcastle. We perform in many different venues throughout the region. See our concerts page for further details.

Our instrumentation consists of piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinets (E flat, B flat, alto and bass), bassoon, saxophones (alto, tenor and baritone), trumpet, French horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba and percussion.

New players over the age of 18 are welcome. If you are interested in joining the band, please e-mail us at and we will invite you to a Tuesday rehearsal.
There is a waiting list for most instruments at the present time. However we do require a drummer. We expect a standard of at least grade 5. Subscriptions are currently £32.00 per year and free (or £7 voluntary contribution per year) for full-time students and other concessions.

Socialising is an important part of band life. We regularly enjoy going out together for a meal and a drink, and occasionally try something more adventurous!
